How Can I Tell if My Heater is Energy Efficient?

Keith Harnish • Nov 10, 2023

According to Forbes, Americans spend an average of $429.33 on monthly utilities, and they predict that the cost of heating a home with gas will increase by 28% or more in 2023. So it's no surprise that now, more than ever, many homeowners are looking for ways to lower utility costs, including heating and cooling costs.

You can lower heating costs by reducing the temperature on your thermostat, ensuring vents, registers, and radiators are clear, installing insulation, and more. However, those steps will only go so far if your HVAC system is not energy-efficient. Therefore, knowing the energy efficiency of your HVAC system is crucial to lowering heating and cooling costs.

How to Determine if Your Heater is Energy Efficient

Pay Attention to Your Heating Bills

Many factors can affect heating bills – weather, energy costs (gas, oil, propane, etc.), and more. But look at last year's heating bills and compare them with this year's bills – comparing November 2022 to November 2023, etc. Higher energy costs (not within your control) will bring higher heating bills, so don't just look at the total cost. Look at how much energy you're using, which is a better indicator of the efficiency of your heater.

Know your HVAC system's AFUE Rating

"AFUE [annual fuel utilization efficiency] is a measure of how efficient the appliance is in converting the energy from fuel to heat over the course of a typical year," the U.S. Department of Energy explains. "An AFUE of 90% means that 90% of the energy in the fuel becomes heat for the home, and the other 10% escapes up the chimney and elsewhere. "

The higher the AFUE number, the more efficient your system is. An HVAC system is highly efficient if the AFUE is at least 90%.

However, the AFUE indicates how efficient your HVAC system is when working at its peak. A clogged air filter or other issues will decrease the system's efficiency, so regular professional tune-ups and air filter replacements are crucial to keeping your HVAC working at its peak.

Consider the Age of Your HVAC System

How long an HVAC system will last depends on many factors, such as the type of system, outdoor temperatures, how well it's maintained, etc., but the average HVAC system lasts 15-25 years. However, as your HVAC system ages, it becomes less efficient. Proper maintenance helps maintain efficiency, but the U.S. Department of Energy recommends replacing your furnace every 15 years.

According to the Office of Energy Efficiency & Renewable Energy, "ENERGY STAR certified heating and cooling equipment, when properly installed, can yield annual energy bill savings of 10-30%." In addition to lowering annual heating and cooling costs, a new HVAC system may improve airflow, operate more quietly, improve air quality, increase your home's resale value, and minimize repair and maintenance costs.
